A Stroll with Jasper in Ocean Springs Mississippi
We are camping at the Davis Bayou Campground that is located in the Gulf Islands National Seashore, near Ocean Springs, Mississippi. We had thought we would spend the morning exploring the bayou in our kayaks but, since the weather brought us a blustery, windy and damp morning, we decided to head off in our truck and explore Ocean Springs instead. Since we were going to bring Jasper with us, we checked out the Bring Fido website for places and restaurants that were dog friendly. To our delight, there were several restaurants that were dog friendly and there was also a public beach that allowed dogs and their people to share the white sand and the gorgeous view of the Gulf of Mexico. Off we went- adventure was awaiting.
Following our GPS directions, we drove down to Front Beach Drive and found a beautiful drive along the sandy white beach of the Gulf of Mexico. There were parking places at the foot of the Ocean Springs- Biloxi Bridge and it turned out that this was a great place to start our walk. The Ocean Springs Bridge Mosaic Mural is a collection of four mosaics on the side of the bridge that provide a colorful display of the wildlife and seashore of the Biloxi Bay.
After marveling at the mosaics, we headed past the Ocean Springs Yacht Club and on down to the beach. We enjoyed being able to stroll on the beach with Jasper and to gaze at the blue and shimmery waters of the Gulf and the view of Biloxi across the water. As we walked back to the truck, we were hearing a sound that seemed like lots of wind chimes all swaying in the wind. At first, we thought the wind chimes were at the Yacht Club and then realized that the wind chime music was in fact the rigging lines on the sail boats that were on the beach. What a lovely sound to listen to as you walk on the beach.
The Bring Fido Web Site provided a listing of eleven restaurants that welcomed dogs on their outdoor porches and we decided to try the Government Street Grocery for our lunch. We sat at a table within the large outdoor porch and as soon as our waitress saw that Jasper was with us, she brought out a bowl of water and a couple pieces of bacon for him. This was an extra touch that made this restaurant special.
We decided to have some fried pickles and found them to have a very light crust instead of the usual heavier crust. We both enjoyed them as we waited for our lunch. There was an extensive beer list and Bob choose Tin Roof Blonde Ale and found the beer to be a nice light beer to enjoy with his Spicy Roast Beef wrap. I was in the mood for a Tequila Martini (also known as a Mexican Martini) so, although the restaurant didn’t make that particular drink, our waitress and I were able to figure out the recipe for the bartender. The drink was great with my Muffaletta.
After our leisurely lunch, we strolled further along Government Street and Washington Street, the heart of the shopping area in Ocean Springs. There were many restaurants, clothing shops and art galleries. We enjoyed the small town friendly atmosphere and treated ourselves to an afternoon dessert from the French Kiss Pastries shop. We enjoyed out time in Ocean Springs and look forward to returning for a longer visit.
